The final proposals by Richard Haass given to the Northern Ireland Political Parties have been published on the Irish Executive website. This has come after months of talks on the issues of Parades, flags and the legacy of the Northern Ireland conflict.
So the Irish have come up with nothing. They get one of America’s best negotiators to mediate the talks and they come up with nothing. I’m not going to criticise the Irish for not coming up with a deal because they’re are deep rooted tensions but they really need to try harder if they’re going to succeed.
Yes they’ve found common ground but when you’re people are still fighting each other there’s a point when you must think forget it. To be honest I don’t think the Northern Irish can work on common ground. Yes they want peace but there’s been way too much conflict in the past.
I’ve said this before and I’ll say it again. Give them Independence and wash your hands of the whole affair. If they realise that they’re stuck by themselves they might actually co-operate with each other. Screw them over to help each other. I actually think it’s the only way to do it.
Haass has made recommendations in his report. Hopefully the Irish will take that onboard and start working on them.
Nobody wants war, nobody want’s conflict but I really don’t see a way out of the Northern Ireland problem. Hopefully they start to use this common ground along with Haass’s recommendations and finally sort themselves out.
